Those who associate Patti LaBelle and her former colleagues Nona Hendryx and Sarah Dash with the gritty, robust belting they did on 1970s hits like "Lady Marmalade," "Isn't It a Shame" and "Get You Somebody New" will be surprised to hear how much lighter and softer their approach is on this collection of Christmas songs (all of them recorded in Philadelphia in 1963 and reissued on CD in 1998). Before LaBelle, Hendryx and Dash became the trio Labelle, they were part of the quartet Patti LaBelle & The Blue Belles (which also included Supreme-to-be Cindy Birdsong). The Philadelphians were part of the girl group sound of the early to mid-1960s, and on these Bobby Martin-produced recordings, they tend to favor girl-group pop over girl-group R&B/pop. Their choice of material ranges from traditional European Christmas carols like "Silent Night," "O Come, All Ye Faithful" and "The First Noel" to 20th-century Christmas pop favorites such as "Winter Wonderland," "White Christmas" and "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town." Christmas Classics isn't an essential purchase, but it's pleasant and enjoyable.
