A la Demande

Another strong outing in a long string from Patrick St. Eloi and Kassav. The title track, "A la Demande," was a massive hit in the Antilles and appears on all of the greatest-hits compilations. The formula had proven its worth and there was no reason to alter it. The solo efforts of Patrick St. Eloi were becoming more distinctive and creative. The musicians here remain the core of Kassav and work very effectively with the versatile, silky voice of St. Eloi. The zouk is again pretty much straight-ahead, but with heft and drive behind it. "Ballade Kreyol" showcases that drive and the uncanny ability to change things up with unpredictable ease and aplomb. "Tchinbe La" doesn't forget the cadence roots of zouk. Its loping two-three clave rhythm reminds one of the golden era of the big bands. The length of each track allows for these extended grooves to develop the swing — the essence of zouk and its dancefloor appeal. Only one track on the whole album lacks bite. This is Patrick St. Eloi fronting Kassav in full stride. Highly recommended.
