First formed in 1993, Detroit’s Outrageous Cherry has since been expanding its sunny and romantic approach to '60s-inspired psychedelic guitar pop. Twenty years and 10 albums later, this best-of compilation is long overdue. Fittingly, Wide Awake in the Spirit World—The Best of Outrageous Cherry arrives via “Little” Steven Van Zandt's Wicked Cool Records. Squealing Moog feedback and frontman Matthew Smith’s reverb-sponged vocals on “What Have You Invented Today?” set the collection's tone. Then “Stay Right Here for a Little While” ushers in his bandmates’ vocal harmonies, sounding like a shadowy take on The Mamas & the Papas. “Girl You Have Magic Inside You” is a great example of Smith’s talent for crafting amorous serenades with backmasked guitars, period-correct psych tones, and occult imagery. Both “Why Don’t We Talk About Something Else” and “Our Love Will Change the World” exemplify the band’s more uplifting side. Conversely, “Wide Awake in the Spirit World” and the title track best depict Outrageous Cherry’s darker psychedelia.
