Otis Redding was among the greatest soul singers who ever lived. His short, sweet life has not left many recordings. But each piece of the puzzle only reconfirms his incredible abilities. Redding could lead a crowd to frenzy. Or he could break its heart. These recordings from April 9 and 10, 1966 at Hollywood’s Whisky A Go Go feature three complete sets with his “orchestra,” a horn-driven band that is delightfully rougher than his usual studio-mates, the Bar-Kays or Booker T. & The MGs. A few endearing moments of uncertainly add to the humanity. Yet, overall, this is one well-oiled machine able to shift gears when necessary. No matter the duplications of certain tracks, each version of “Satisfaction” and “Chained and Bound” offers up its own particular moments of joy. To hear Redding sing so heartbreakingly on “Just One More Day” or to stretch the levels of empathy on “These Arms of Mine” is to truly hear one of the greatest voices of any era. His signature tune, “I’ve Been Loving You Too Long (To Stop Now),” is without peer.
