[Edit]Skeletons in the Closet surveys 1981 to 1983, when Oingo Boingo released three classic albums on A&M. At the time, Boingo was one of the most popular bands on the L.A. club scene, and these 12 songs make it easy to see why. They blend the agitation of punk with the nervous drive of ska and the far-out instrumentation of world music. Danny Elfman’s elastic vocals hold the songs together, and his vibrant wordplay is the linguistic equivalent of the band’s sonic frenzy. Songs like “Grey Matter” and “Only a Lad” are fight songs for kids who preferred to fight with their imaginations rather than fists. Perhaps the most amazing thing about Boingo is that, at heart, it was a dance band. From “Little Girls” to “Insects” and “Whole Day Off,” this is dance music for all the nerds, freaks, and misfits who weren’t welcome at their official school dances. Some say the '80s was the decade in which the geeks inherited the earth. If that’s true, Oingo Boingo was the house band.
