With The Circle Jerks' Keith Morris commanding the vocal stage, OFF! guarantees hardcore punk rock kicks. With 16 tracks in 16 minutes, this self-titled release is everything fans of early-'80s punk might want. The riffs are unrelenting. The pace swings from fast to hyperspeedy, and the lyrics cruise through the usual topics of anti-authority, nuclear war, who's a punk, and whatever else Morris might be barking about over the joyous din. "King Kong Brigade" even finds a few seconds for ambient noises. But the aggression is brutal, and short blasts of ecstasy such as "I Need One (I Want One)," "Man from Nowhere," and "Feelings Are Meant to Be Hurt" feature just enough melody to make them songs in the proper sense. While many "punk" groups focus more on pop hooks and smoothed-over productions, OFF! goes for the jugular. If you ever loved early Black Flag, The Circle Jerks, or The Angry Samoans, you owe it to yourself to hear the legacy being carried out 30 years on.
