Brooklyn's Naam is one of the great stoner rock bands of the 21st century. Unafraid to burn long and heavy, Naam does its best work when it stretches out and waits. At 11 minutes, The Starchild is a chance for listeners to get in the zone with the perfect nod. Introduced by the two-minute Middle Eastern twang of "History's Son" and concluding with the lingering notes of "Exit Theme," The Starchild adds organist John Weingarten to the mix for an early-'70s burn. The Hawkwind influence is stronger than the Stooges influence this time out, and whatever metal overtones were present on the excellent self-titled debut album have been modified a touch. "Lands Unknown" works a cool, spacy psychedelic flow, while "Sentry of Skies" sticks with an acoustic setting.
