Veteran guitarists Mundell Lowe and Lloyd Wells play a number of standards on this very easygoing duo session in tribute to the late guitar great Charlie Byrd. Every track has the feeling of spontaneity, as two old friends played favorites for themselves. From their soft stroll through a lyrical rendition of Claude Thornhill's theme "Snowfall" to a decidedly laid-back "Oh, Lady Be Good" (too often played at a frenetic tempo) and the gorgeous take of "My One and Only Love," this CD is obviously a guitar fan's dream for late-night listening. The originals prove to memorable as well, particularly Lowe's loping "Maya" and Wells' intricate blues "What's up Doc." The intimate sound achieved by engineer Brendan Harkin also adds to the considerable value of this recommended CD.
