[Edit]Listening to a blues great like Muddy Waters in chronological groupings lets you hear a major artist evolving over time. By late 1958, Waters was a veteran presence and one of Chess Records' major stars. This set includes the recordings that made up two of Waters' most essential albums—Muddy Waters Sings Big Bill Broonzy and Muddy Waters at Newport—along with other landmark tunes like "You Shook Me," "Walkin' Thru the Park," and "Mean Mistreater." His self-assurance was never higher, and his electric bands here have both a toughness and a light touch; this is common knowledge to blues purists yet could be a shock for those raised on rock 'n' roll's often heavy-handed treatment of the genre. Waters' classic performance of "Got My Mojo Working," in both parts, is essential. "You Need Love" is the Willie Dixon song from which Led Zeppelin molded "Whole Lotta Love" and is among the tracks highlighted with organ riffs. Guitarist Earl Hooker appears on the previously unreleased instrumental of "Sweet Black Angel."
