[Edit]Recalling too many late-'60s and early-'70s British power blues acts to list or even remember, Mother Superior takes their cues from classic guitar bands like Humble Pie, Cream, and Deep Purple on this, their second full-length, self-released disc. Singer/guitarist Jim Wilson, drummer Jason Mackenroth, and bassist Marcus Blake get a little heavier and more psychedelic on 1997's Kaleidoscope, as numbers like "Got a Thing About You" recall a little Black Sabbath or even Montrose. Wilson's vocal work goes higher than that of the band's debut, adding an Ian Gillan-like edge to Mother Superior's already metal-leaning blues stomp. Standout tracks include howlers like "Where Are All the Rock N' Roll People" and "You Think It's a Challenge," as well as laid-back numbers like "Last One to Know." The vocal maturation of Wilson really puts Mother Superior over the top on Kaleidoscope, a collection of '90s retro power blues that is just about as good as this genre gets.
