The minimalist composer and folk hero Moondog was a cult figure in his day and, with his homemade instruments, Viking regalia, and stirringly beautiful music, an unmistakable presence on his Sixth Avenue stomping grounds. However the passage of time had left Moondog’s legacy sadly diminished, with many of his recordings, obscure even at the time of there release, languishing as out-of-print rarities for decades. Rare Material compiles two discs of heretofore out of print recordings from the very beginning and end of Moondog’s career. The first disc is composed of stark streetside recordings cut for Prestige in the ‘50s, while the second includes a number of intriguing, and much scarcer recordings from the early ‘90s, when Moondog was working with large ensembles in Europe. These later recordings lack some of the roughshod charm of Moondog’s earliest work, but it's certainly thrilling to hear this remarkable material given convincing full band treatments.
