Come on Die Young (Deluxe Edition)

Three albums into their illustrious career, Glasgow's loudest rock band hit their stride with Come On Die Young. The album opens with a sample from Iggy Pop, as the band align themselves with noise provocateurs of yesteryear. The record is mostly subdued through its first eight songs. "Cody" is lumbering indie rock and the rare Mogwai track that features vocals, and "Waltz for Aiden" is likewise a rare Mogwai waltz. The melodiousness takes a turn for the sinister on the live staple "May Nothing but Happiness…," and things get beastly from there, climaxing with "Christmas Steps," the monster at the end of the movie, featuring one of Mogwai's most grandiose and thrilling crescendos. This deluxe edition features live versions and demos, as well as rarities, including "Hugh Dallas" and an alternate take of "Helps Both Ways" that includes the song's titular John Madden sample.
