During its mid-'90s heyday, Mobb Deep was the dictionary definition of East Coast thug rap. It was arguably New York's best criminal-minded hip-hop group, creating a sound that would directly influence dozens of other crews, plus its own affiliated artists like Big Noyd and Infamous Mobb. Havoc and Prodigy had co-starring roles in the East-vs.-West beef, the Kim-vs.-Foxy beef, and the Jay-vs.-Nas beef, not to mention their own verbal wars with Keith Murray and (briefly) each other. Although many longtime fans started to dismiss Mobb Deep after the post-millennial R&B debacle "Hey Luv (Anything)" and an ill-fated partnership with 50 Cent and G Unit, the duo still has several great albums and two untouchable classics (The Infamous and Hell on Earth) in its deep discography; both of those are well-represented here. The second half of this is hit-or-miss, but signature tracks like "Shook Ones (Pt. II)," "Quiet Storm," and "Survival of the Fittest" still sound amazing.
