One of the most agreeable vocalists managed by Columbia A&R head Mitch Miller, Guy Mitchell sold more than 40 million records during the '50s. His full-throated approach to singing worked well for the purposes of Columbia and Miller, whether the song was a sentimental standard or a buoyant, handclapping novelty hit with accompaniment by the Mitch Miller Chorus (which occasionally took a larger role on Mitchell's sides than Mitchell himself). The Living Era collection My Truly, Truly Fair includes 27 songs, making it the longest single-disc collection available. Also, it gives prominent place to his most popular material: the ballad "My Heart Cries for You" "My Truly, Truly Fair," and "There's a Pawnshop on the Corner in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania" (all million-sellers). They're some of the best sides to issue from the notoriously generic Columbia factory during the early '50s, and Mitchell's other material, though heavily melodramatic, stays at the same level. Very few listeners will want an entire disc of Guy Mitchell, but for those who do, this is the one to buy.
