The first 15 recordings by the Mills Blue Rhythm Band are reissued on this collector's LP; all are also currently available (along with a few other selections) on a Classics CD. The advantage of this particular release is that there are extensive liner notes. The orchestra, put together by Irving Mills partly to perform his songs (10 of the 15 numbers on this album were allegedly co-written by Mills), was a good second-level big band that improved with time. There are no major names on the set (best-known is pianist Edgar Hayes), and the vocalists (mostly Charlie Lawman, Dick Robertson and the always enthusiastic Chick Bullock) are quite dated. However, the group had spirit and clean ensembles, and they could swing. Such numbers as "Moanin'," "Blue Rhythm," "Blue Flame," "Red Devil" and "Futuristic Jungleism" should interest collectors of early swing bands.
