In 1970, Miles Davis released Bitches Brew, an album that famously transformed jazz. Producer Teo Macero’s contributions to the recording — including his editing — were important, but Bitches Brew Live proves that it wasn’t just innovative studio techniques that set this classic apart. Live’s first three cuts were recorded at the 1969 Newport Jazz Festival; the last six tracks feature a larger group, and were captured at the 1970 Isle of Wight Festival. Bitches Brew Live bristles with wildly inventive energy. Chick Corea and Keith Jarrett’s keyboard work is dazzling, and at times, downright otherworldly. Brazilian percussionist Airto Moreira contributes sounds that could be coming from an even stranger galaxy. Drawing from the aggression of rock and the abstraction of free jazz, Jack DeJohnette is a powerhouse. British bassist Dave Holland drives the band hard, and Gary Bartz’s saxophone slices through the thick densities. The charged small-group Newport performance was recorded before the release of Bitches Brew, and the expansive Isle of Wight performance took place after the groundbreaking album came out. Both sets are amazing.
