Longtime American traditional Celtic vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Mick Moloney offers a history lesson on his 2002 Shanachie release Far From the Shamrock Shore. The 17 songs on the disc explore the Irish-American experience in song, through American Civil War battlefields, coal mining towns, vaudeville stages, and any number of industrial cities in the East. The songs are engaging on their own, and the artist's own liner notes add significant historical interest. The only minor complaint is that, while Moloney's voice is in fine form on all tracks, his warm mandolin, guitar, and banjo playing is sorely underused.
