Mick Hucknall was the soulful voice behind Simply Red’s classic ‘80s hit “Holding Back the Years.” Bobby “Blue” Bland is an R&B giant whose songs from the late ‘50s and early 60s defined the era and became standards (“Stormy Monday Blues,” “Farther Up the Road,” “I Pity the Fool”). At 47, the Manchester UK-bred Hucknall decided it was time to tackle the Mempis bluesman’s catalog and bring these classic songs to a new generation. Hucknall’s in much tougher form than you may remember. He attacks “Ain’t That Lovin’ You” with full-on ferocity. “Poverty” begins with a ‘70s disco dance groove, wah-wah guitar and a crashing piano; the song is virtually rebuilt from the ground up. “Stormy Monday Blues” keeps up a manic pace with a kinetic keyboard tracing a tough near-techno rhythm. The seductive purr of Bland’s “I’ll Take Care of You” is given a full-stage production. These aren’t so much covers as reinterpretations filled with surprising decisions.
