One of the things that made Michael Hall's previous albums stand out was a light, quirky sense of humor. That light touch isn't much in evidence on Adequate Desire, at least overtly. The tone is dark, even bitter on many of these songs. That would be acceptable if the resulting material was at his usual high standard, but a few of the compositions are on the weak side. Even so, there are gems here. Hall shows that he can craft a great pop tune on "Under The Rainbow With You" and "A New Favorite Place", which features incredible lap steel playing by Jon Dee Graham. The standout is "Hello Mr. Death", which is one side of a conversation with the Grim Reaper. Hall's wry, offhand reflections on love and mortality in this piece rank with his best work. If there is ever a Michael Hall box set those three cuts would have to be included, but nothing else here would be essential. On the balance, it's worth getting a copy of Adequate Desire.
