Caledon, Ontario, is a small town north of Toronto, and it serves as the spiritual backdrop for Megan Bonnell’s debut album. It’s her hometown, and its bucolic surroundings have inspired both her love of nature and her sense of loneliness. With musical arrangements that further fuel her imagination, Bonnell pushes her vocals to the edge, with a conviction that makes every movement feel like an important one. Producers Chris Stringer (Timber Timbre, Snowblink) and Joshua Van Tassel orchestrate “Stars” to the heavens, while stressing the piano and vocal to the melodically strong “Say My Name.” The deep, rich reverbs on the vocals and instruments add further intrigue. The album starts strong, with manifestos of purpose that combine the mystery of Mazzy Star with the articulate passion of a young singer/songwriter in “Coming Home” and “Found You.” But the playful mid-album piano tune “I’m Not Your Woman” reveals further complexity and humor. Bonnell may be young, but she’s reflective, smart, and musically sophisticated beyond her years. Her debut EP, MAPS, was a likable introduction, but Hunt and Chase is a fully engaged expression of talent.
