A starry pianist joining a string trio and double-bass player for the Trout Quintet is quite common, but it’s rare to have a star violinist in the ensemble too—and they don’t get much more stellar than Mutter and Trifonov. It doesn’t unbalance the performance one bit though. Both are sensitive and collegial chamber musicians. Trifonov plays with charm and delicacy, and Mutter with surprising wit, while their partners make for a unified and lively group. Some very appealing extras include two Schubert songs played by Mutter and Trifonov.
