Just as its title implies, Saturday Night/Sunday Morning breaks down into a double album, with one half rocking things out at the honky tonk and the second part seeking redemption through soulful tunes with a gospel touch. Marty Stuart wraps all this in classic fiddle/Telecaster-fueled country music (“I’m Blue I’m Lonesome,” “When It Comes to Loving You”), guided by guitarist Kenny Vaughan. Things eventually move from the upbeat “Boogie Woogie Down the Jericho Road” to the slower, reflective tunes where the harmonies expand to gospel standards. Mavis Staples joins him for The Staples Singers’ standard “Uncloudy Day.”
