Singer/songwriter Marlon Saunders' solo debut leaves no doubt that he is one of the new elite's rising stars. Enter My Mind is a heavy R&B-flavored, old-school-style collection of emotive ballads and irresistible dance sounds that bring out the best of Saunders' great, soulful voice. As a vocalist, Saunders is not exactly an Eddie Levert, Marvin Gaye, or Luther Vandross, three of the greatest R&B love ballad singers of the 20th century, but he certainly has the potential to be and his special sound should reap a windfall of fans. His songwriting skillfully blends memorable symbolism and metaphors with strong melodies that entice listeners through his beautifully inspired message. "For Love" melds classic Stevie Wonder and Wonderlove's smoove (a combination of smooth and groove) with a cool hip-hop/R&B stroll. "Premonition" channels the spirits of Marvin Gaye and Eddie Levert and "Love Serenade" is reminiscent of the hot funk bop and irresistible killer hooks often heard from Soul II Soul. Enter My Mind has no resemblance to Saunders' efforts as co-founder of the groundbreaking acid jazz/hip-hop/R&B group Jazzhole, his vocal quartet called Sepia, or his time with Bobby McFerrin's innovative Voicestra. Marlon Saunders is set for major stardom. He has the heat, the look, the sound, and the sex appeal that should keep his fans coming back for more. Top picks: "Inspiration" and "Afro Blue My Mind."
