[Edit]Recorded at the Henry Fonda Theatre in Hollywood during the Spring of 2005, Live In Hollywood contains intense versions of classic tunes from throughout Marianne Faithfull’s career, as well as a few stops on tunes from her then most recent album, 2004’s Before the Poison. Her voice is an unnatural marvel, croaking from underneath years of hard living to bring us songs that revel in their hard-won truths. “Falling from Grace” executes exactly as its title implies, with Faithfully grasping for the chance to remain on top of her world. Other catalog classics such as John Lennon’s “Working Class Hero,” Mick Jagger and Keith Richards’ “As Tears Go By” and Shel Silverstein’s “The Ballad of Lucy Jordan” were long ago claimed by Faithfull for her own. Poison’s “No Child of Mine” and “Last Song” are given strong performances, but it’s the single-minded power of “Times Square” and “Trouble In Mind” that make the greatest impact. The lady is the Queen of the Modern Blues.
