Broken English wasn’t just a restart of Marianne Faithfull’s turbulent career; it's turned out to be one of the most enduring albums of the late ‘70s, an era packed with solid releases that deserve their place among the great works of the '60s as the definition of rock ’n’ roll. This deluxe edition features the original remarkable album, plus earlier mixes of every song. This lets hardcore fans feel as if they’re listening to the record anew, from a different camera angle. The single version of the title track cuts a minute and a half for the pop view, while the various remixes further illustrate the shocking power of this material. For years, Faithfull's versions of John Lennon’s “Working Class Hero,” Shel Silverstein’s “The Ballad of Lucy Jordan,” and her own scabrous “Why’d Ya Do It?” have been rightfully singled out for their emotive power. However, this edition also puts a spotlight on the album’s lesser-known tunes and lets one hear beyond the advanced electronics that were on the cutting edge of 1979.
