Released soon after the first official day of summer, Magic!'s debut seems scientifically engineered to accompany the sunniest of seasons. Citing The Police as a key influence, the band channel the serpentine rhythms and canny chord changes of that '80s trio. The heavyweight summer jam "Rude" is swaying reggae in the style of No Doubt's "Spiderwebs," and much of the record takes cues from that Orange County band's stylistic range. "Little Girl Big World" whizzes by with zippy postpunk fervor, while "One Woman One Man" is a stripped-down acoustic track that harkens back to a certain Jamaican reggae deity. But don't let the chillaxed vibes fool you: this is uplifting arena-ready rock of the highest order.
