Al Boo Boo follows the blueprint of Thizzelle Washington, blending drug-induced merriment with old-school gangster grit. With “Grown S**t,” “Genie of the Lamp” and “S**tonaman” Dre further perfects his ability to merge rump-shaking party songs with woozy textures. Similarly, his rhymes refuse to turn away from surrealistic imagery even as they stick to street tales. Dre’s love for states of intoxication became more explicit with songs like “Dipped When You See Me,” but he always stays light on his feet. Where other rappers get bogged down with beef and self-aggrandizement, Dre always stays one step ahead of his foes, charming his listener whether he’s making threats or making sex talk. He is more of an individualist than a prankster, but no matter what he’s doing Dre makes sure the listener enjoys the ride.
