It’s become expected that each Lucinda Williams album with be filled with intense emotional moments comforted by electric guitars gently tremolo-ed, Hammond B-3 organs that purr and pedal steel guitars that weep alongside Williams’ sultry vocal delivery. Blessed is exactly that. It’s yet another focused effort that continues her streak. “Buttercup” says goodbye to an old flame. “I Don’t Know How You’re Livin’” is a song of compassion, frustration and unconditional love. “Born to Be Loved” plays like a classic ‘60s soul ballad. “Seeing Black” is ferocious hard rock, a tribute to Vic Chesnutt (who once wrote a song called “Lucinda Williams”) who committed suicide. Elvis Costello plays a scorching guitar solo to accompany the anger and sadness of losing such a major talent. “Soldier’s Song,” “Blessed,” “Ugly Truth” and “Sweet Love” are pure Lucinda pathos. Don Was’ production brings extra juice to a band of highly skilled musicians — from Greg Leisz’ pedal steel to Rami Jaffee’s organ. The Deluxe Edition includes twelve acoustic demos recorded at Williams’ kitchen table.
