Written at the close of the 19th Century, La Bohème is the most frequently performed masterpiece by one of opera’s paramount composers, Giacomo Puccini. Set among poor artists and writers of Paris earlier in the century, young love blossoms in a frozen rooftop garret when Rodolfo, a poet, meets his neighbour, Mimi. This recording—considered among the greatest opera recordings of all time—combines a cast of singers at the height of their careers, an outstanding orchestra and celebrated opera conductor Herbert von Karajan. The great duo of Luciano Pavarotti and Mirella Freni bring Puccini’s characters to life, from the first blush of their initial attraction to the heartbreaking finale.
