On this well-realized project, the veteran Christian alt-country combo takes a journey across America via Route 66, stopping for snapshots of ragged Southwestern landscapes and roadside denizens along the way. In delivering these songs, Derri Daugherty’s sweet high tenor contrasts with the gruffer vocal textures of Terry Taylor and Mike Roe, with the three coming together in a luminous harmony blend on “The World Is Against Us.” Lyrically, Old Angel finds a Biblical resonance in recounting the Okies’ ‘30s exodus to California; “Traveling Mercies,” “Dust In My Bowl” and “Pearl Moon” are especially poignant. From the fiddle-driven “Dancin’ On the Devil’s Elbow” to the growling trucker’s tune “America’s Main Street” and the punkified “Wicked Guns,” the Dogs cover a lot of terrain. The album ends with the bittersweet title number, a slice of magical realism with a California folk/rock twist. The band does it all with an air of easy camaraderie and an understated sense of the spiritual. Fans of rootsy Americana will want to take this road trip.
