NYC-based singer/songwriter Lori Carson has a bohemian's love for art and beauty and a complete disinterest in commercial moves that might make her more accessible to the masses. Her debut album, the underrated Shelter, was an artsy nod in that direction, with producer Hal Willner trying to find the correct balance. For the follow-up, Where It Goes, Carson uses her experience with The Golden Palominos to help keep things on course. The opening art-song drama, "Down Here," perfectly springs to life a gentle, haunting melody; it prepares the listener for this low-key, subtle work that finds comfort in being sad. The hope is in the work, where Carson pursues a rainy-day beauty, reveling in strings and piano that take a lifelong love of Joni Mitchell and bring it new expression. "Waking to the Dream of You," "You Won't Fall," and "Anyday" are gorgeous melodies further emphasized by a voice as fragile as it is forceful.
