There can be no closer association between a great musician and a piece of music than that of cellist Jacqueline du Pré and Elgar’s Cello Concerto. This iconic recording, made just after the remarkably gifted 20-year-old joined the London Symphony Orchestra, established du Pré as a major recording star and revealed the concerto as the composer’s late masterpiece. Unabashedly romantic, the recording became even more significant following the cellist’s untimely death at 42. It remains the benchmark recording of the work. The album also includes an exquisite performance of Elgar’s “Sea Songs” by another major English artist, singer Janet Baker.
