Featuring a goodly share of Lionel Hampton vocal turns, "1937-1940: Small Combos" finds the bandleader-vibraphonist in his early prime and heading up some of the hottest groups from the late swing era. Hampton is all blazing runs and percussive power, laying down the first distinctive vibe sound in jazz on highlights like "China Stomp," "High Society," and "The Sheik of Araby." Something of a precursor to '40s jump blues, these 23 tracks may not offer the ideal entrée to Hampton's best music — the Classics and Bluebird labels offer better first-choice discs — but will still make for some high-end combo swing listening; plus, you get to hear the likes of Dizzy Gillespie, Chu Berry, Benny Carter, and Buster Bailey at their best.
