The Grammy nominated R&B singer/songwriter gets her holiday spirit on with a truly warming Christmas album. Although this 12-song outing boasts five original songs, even standard carols like "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" and "Silent Night" sound brand new because they've been rearranged and (sometimes) reconstructed to make room for Ledisi's dynamic vocal range. She breaks the ice with "I'll Go," a gospel-tinged intro that at just over two minutes long bumps right into the festively contrasting, four-on-the-floor version of the traditional "Children Go Where I Send Thee." "Be There For Christmas" is an original number that pulls in classic soul instrumentation — a bouncing horn section, a Rhodes jazz piano, doo-wop backing singers, a guitar that sounds imported from ‘70s Jackson 5 records, and a buttery bass player with Carol Kaye- inspired licks. Retro blues bard Keb' Mo' cameos on a swinging, rootsy rendition of "Please Come Home For Christmas." It's easily the album's standout, and with Keb' Mo's vintage guitar tones and Ledisi wailing like a young P.P. Arnold, the chemistry birthed between the two luminaries here is astonishing.
