They're not kidding with that title; clocking in at around three hours and featuring an extensive survey of LCD Soundsystem's entire catalog, The Long Goodbye doesn't just slam the door on the dance-rock project that James Murphy devoted a decade to. It's more like a jazz funeral, expressed through joyful club music ("Yeah," "Tribulations," "Get Innocuous!"), Krautrock-inspired workout routines (a lengthy Nike commission that's performed in full), and relatively obscure covers (Alan Vega, Harry Nilsson, Yes). And while Reggie Watts, Arcade Fire, and Sh!t Robot all stop by to sing backup alongside Murphy's airtight band—including current and former members of Hot Chip, !!!, The Crystal Ark, and The Juan MacLean—this show belongs to the man himself. From his early days doling out DFA remixes to enduring anthems like "New York, I Love You but You're Bringing Me Down" and "Losing My Edge," Murphy has made his mark as a spokesman for Gen X'ers who refuse to relinquish control of the scene they made before the millennials took over. By the time "All My Friends" builds to its minimalist climax, it's hard not to scream right alongside its rallying cry: "Where are your friends tonight?"
