[Edit]Vibraphonist Lalo sometimes sounds a bit like Gary Burton but her music, while atmospheric and full of changing tone colors, can also be a bit dry. The instrumentation during her nine originals changes from song to song, with creative use made of bass clarinet, up to four horns, and even prepared piano and glockenspiel. Never really cutting loose as much as setting up moods, Lalo's pieces contain their share of surprises even while the music often de-emphasizes forward movement and floats. Lalo's solo talents are underplayed during the ensemble-oriented music which, though colorful in spots, falls short of essential.
