This 2003 compilation consists of rare 12-inches, B-sides, and outtakes that KRS-One recorded between 1995 and 2002. In some ways it provides a better career retrospective than a “greatest hits” survey, as KRS was often at his best when he was allowed to be spontaneous and experimental. Something like “No Wack DJs”—rapped entirely over an old Motown song—is essential precisely because it’s so eccentric. No one but KRS could pull it off. In that spirit, “Smilin’ Faces,” “Article (Remix),” and the gorgeous “Remember” are among the lesser-known works not to be missed.
