The album sleeve for Klaatu’s 1976 debut, 3:47 EST, artfully neglected to include band members’ photos or names. Then an article surfaced in Rhode Island’s Providence Journal titled “Could Klaatu Be The Beatles?” When the band came clean, its audience was angry that it wasn't The Beatles. But today, there’s no denying the epic fun of songs like the opening operatic space rocker, “Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft.” Despite some George Martin–inspired production tricks, the song sounds more like a melding of Queen and ELO than anything The Beatles ever recorded. Klaatu's sense of humor was refined and reserved. The standout song “Sub-Rosa Subway” is slightly styled like a Paul McCartney tune, but singing drummer Terry Draper doesn’t have a familiar vocal counterpart. Klaatu's sophomore album, Hope, took a deliberately different direction. Homing in on the band's knack for experimental rock opera concepts, “We’re Off You Know” plays with an astral whimsy, while “Long Live Politzania” is more than nine minutes of proggy pomp.
