Versus

It's uncommon to see an entire remix album based on a folk band's work. But whether influenced by their label's suggestion or Erland Øye's penchant for dance music, Versus came out the same year as its originating album, Quiet Is the New Loud. Featuring remixes from Röyksopp, Four Tet, and Ladytron, among others, Versus curiously sees the band's original vocals and compositions in relatively recognizable form; the tracks here sound more like alternate takes than full-fledged remixes. Röyksopp gives "I Don't Know What I Can Save You From" a rolling bass line and a minimal, driving beat, while Four Tet offers the most affected version on the record by clipping isolated syllables of "The Weight of My Words" and placing them over a hyper-arpeggiated guitar sample. Rilton's "Über Jazz Mix" of "The Girl from Back Then," on the other hand, is hardly a remix at all, simply adding drums, piano, and trumpet to the sparse original.
