The five-album run that King Diamond had from 1986 to 1990 is one of the greatest in heavy metal history. It was a period of explosive creativity for these Danish metal stalwarts, as the band pushed themselves further with every release: heavier songs, scarier atmospheres, more complex arrangements, and more elaborate stories. Four of those albums—Abigail, Them, Conspiracy, and The Eye—were conceptual works that followed completely original storylines from start to end. No other metal band were as thorough or as ambitious when it came to transferring the scope of novels or movies to music. While some fans would argue that one shouldn’t mix and match songs from such unified albums, The Best of King Diamond offers a tremendous introduction to this hyper-creative group. “Abigail” and “Welcome Home” are the most famous songs here, perhaps because they were as close as King Diamond ever got to singles. In truth, every song on this set is fueled by the same principles: blistering riffs, multidimensional songwriting, atmospheric horror. The great wind who pushes all this music forward is vocalist King Diamond, who whistles, howls, and growls in exhilarated gusts.
