Inevitably, any genre of music will have its traditionalists and its innovators. Irish/Celtic music is no different—there are still plenty of Irish artists who play traditional jigs, reels and airs the way their great grandparents played them, and there are others who are committed to forging ahead and pointing Irish/Celtic music in new directions. One such Celtic band is Kíla, whose Lemonade and Buns combines Irish/Celtic music with elements of African, Middle Eastern and East European music. While Kíla essentially comes from the Irish school of Celtic music (as opposed to the Scottish or Breton schools), this CD is hardly oblivious to the Celtic sounds of Scotland. And much to its credit, Kíla makes such experimentation sound organic and logical rather than unnatural or forced. There's a definite freshness to Lemonade and Buns, which won't appeal to Celtic purists but is enthusiastically recommended to anyone who is seeking something fresh and challenging from Celtic music.
