Kevin Mahogany's debut for Warner Bros. was an obvious attempt to increase his audience. Mahogany sings some fine jazz (including "I"m Walkin'," "Oh Gee" and "Still Swingin'") along with some more R&B-oriented and even poppish material. Mahogany's voice is appealing, so the erratic nature of the repertoire (a few of the selections really don't cut it) is disappointing. Joined by a septet that includes Kirk Whalum on reeds and organist Larry Goldings, Mahogany does uplift most of the songs, permitting one to recommend this CD with reservations.
