[Edit]The veteran pianist Junior Mance has long been known for his soulful take on bop and hard bop. For his Enja release, a live quartet set with tenor-saxophonist Houston Person, Mance is heard in top form on a pair of swing-era standards and three of his originals, all of which are at least 82 minutes long. Most memorable is "Jubilation" (which lives up to its name), "Small Fry" and a 15½-minute version of "I Cried for You." Bassist Calvin Hill and drummer Alvin Queen are fine in support of the two lead voices and it is of little surprise that Mance and Person work together quite well for their styles have long been very complementary. This CD is easily recommended to their fans.
