[Edit]From the first calls of Neil Roth and Lydia Wood’s “Anathea,” it’s apparent that Judy Collins is changing before our ears. Golden Apples of the Sun had featured her fingerpicking and a gentler delivery from her debut, Maid of Constant Sorrow, and now #3 was to include her most solid collection of tunes to date. Bob Dylan makes his first appearance in her catalog with the singularly focused power of “Masters of War.” Shel Silverstein’s “Hey Nelly Nelly” would be a concert staple and his “In the Hills of Shiloh” was brilliantly tailored towards Collins’ stunning alto. Pete Seeger’s “The Bells of Rhymney” and “Turn, Turn, Turn! (To Everything There Is a Season)” would later be covered by the Byrds, whose Roger McGuinn is heard on banjo and guitar on this album. The traditional “Bullgine Run” fits snugly before Dylan’s “Farewell.” Ewan MacColl’s “The Dove” and Woody Guthrie’s “Deportee” fill out the social justice of the album.
