While tenor saxophonist Jonas Kullhammar recalled John Coltrane on his disc from 2000, Salut, on The Soul of Jonas Kullhammar his rambunctious playing is closer to that of Sonny Rollins and Lew Tabackin. Kullhammar, who is not known in the U.S., is an outstanding player with very impressive technique, a lively and extroverted style and the ability to range from bop to free. His playing on this set is mostly boppish but always forward-looking, and he is not shy to display emotional intensity. Accompanied by a fine rhythm section (with Torbjorn Gulz often heard on the Fender Rhodes electric piano), Kullhammar digs into John Coltrane's "Your Lady" and seven of his originals. Best is the catchy "Horseface" and the rhythm changes of "Medalj." Although obscure, Jonas Kullhammar recordings are well worth searching for.
