Tenor saxophonist Jonas Kullhammar does play loud in places, living up to the title of Plays Loud for the People. He is high-powered on the romps but is also a fine interpreter and writer of ballads; "Time Slips by Without a Word" is memorable. Assisted by his longtime rhythm section, Kullhammer performs nine group originals that cover a variety of tempos and moods. Keyboardist Torbjorn Gulz switches to tenor on "Peace 2003," and the final selection has altoist Per Johansson making the group a quintet. Despite the obscurity of these players in the United States, they hold their own with most American jazz musicians and do a fine job of invigorating the modern mainstream of jazz.
