This Storyville LP features music from four different settings, but unfortunately does not list the recording dates. The bulk of the set has either altoist Johnny Hodges or trumpeter Charlie Shavers backed by the obscure Al Waslon trio on radio broadcasts. Hodges plays his usual repertoire, such as "All of Me," "I Got It Bad" and "Jeep's Blues," in concise (under three minutes apiece) but enjoyable versions. Shavers is flashy during his mini-set, making one wonder why he was so underrated during his career. This worthwhile LP is rounded off by a 1954 concert version of "In a Mellow Tone" from Hodges's band, which includes a rare early solo from John Coltrane, and a version of "I'll Make Fun for You" from the early-'40s John Kirby Sextet.
