The genius of the Beatles songbook is its versatility, allowing Beatles songs to be interpreted effectively in almost any style imaginable, from bluegrass to reggae, usually with an impressive grace and durability. This set, featuring John Bayless, Newton Wayland and the Rochester Pops, gives things a classical twist, and it isn't too surprising that what works best here are songs like "Penny Lane" which have a kind of orchestral and cinematic sweep in the original version, while riff-driven songs like "Day Tripper" fare less well, sounding much more caged up and awkward. For some reason two songs that weren't officially done by the Beatles, Paul McCartney's "Live and Let Die" and John Lennon's "Imagine," are included. Sure, Lennon and McCartney were once Beatles, but these simply aren't Beatles songs, however worthy they may be.
