The third and final Joe Perry Project album features a completely new band. Despite the artistic success of I've Got the Rock 'n' Rolls Again, Perry then hooked up with a third lead singer, Cowboy Mach Bell, and a new rhythm section. Bell's vocals are better suited for arenas, and the band is clearly trying to strike the balance between funky blues and a good-time rock 'n' roll vibe. The cover of T. Rex's "Bang a Gong" suggests it was trying to glam things up, and on several cuts the writing is up to the standards of the playing. "Black Velvet Pants" and "Walk with Me Sally" sound like bar-band romps worthy of The Georgia Satellites. Intriguingly, "Women in Chains" sounds like Johnny Thunders in search of The Rolling Stones. "4 Guns West," "Crossfire," and "Never Wanna Stop" showcase the band's funky side. The band chemistry isn't quite up to the energy level of the first two albums, but that's partly due to thinner production. However, Perry fanatics will find a few choice moments.
