[Edit]Said to be the 17th solo album by Joe Grushecky—the former leader of Pittsburgh’s greatest bar band, The Iron City Houserockers, and an artist who counts Bruce Springsteen as a fan and friend—Somewhere East of Eden is proof that getting older only adds resonance to powerfully real tales of lower-middle-class existence. While the young Grushecky practically bled on the stage with his old band, he's now a man who needs to take a rest now and then. But that hasn’t stopped him from playing hard on that stage and writing songs such as “I Can Hear the Devil Knocking,” “Who Cares About Those Kids," and the title track, where he’s still fighting against the odds and telling stories few others have the intellect or empathy to make real. This fan-financed album also proves he’s made a deep connection with the people who've let his music into their hearts, and “I Still Look Good (For Sixty)” and “I Was Born to Rock” are written with a sense of humor and dedication that shows the feeling is mutual.
